Rotary 2022 Convention in Houston (Part 2)Once again Radio Rotary reports from the annual Rotary Convention, this year in Houston, TX, where Dave and Kathy Kruger interviewed representatives of organizations that work with Rotary to make a difference in the world. Stephen Popper, president and CEO of Meals of Hope, tells about how that organization partners with Rotary clubs to pack five different nutritious meals for food pantries to disperse. Razia Jan relates the story of how she, as an Afghan native living in Massachusetts, came to found two free schools to educated girls and women in Afghanistan, still thriving despite the Taliban government. Gemma Sisia used her Rotary connections to found the School of St. Jude, which educates nearly 2,000 impoverished Africans annually as well as supplying volunteer teachers for Tanzanian government school. President and CEO of Mediators Beyond Borders, Prabha Sankaranarayan leads Mediators Beyond Borders International, an official Service Partner of Rotary International that has been working for peace since 1910. The fifteen international Service Partner—organizations such as ShelterBox and Habitat for Humanity—work closely with Rotary but also maintain separate chartable operations. Rotary 2022 Convention in Houston (Part 1)Once again Radio Rotary brought its microphone to the annual Rotary Convention, this year in Houston, TX, where Dave and Kathy Kruger interviewed several representatives of organizations that are making a difference in the world. Tim Nelson, CEO of Hope for Justice, described the work that nonprofit is doing to end human trafficking and various forms of slavery around the world—a mission also of the Rotary Action Group (RAG) Against Slavery. Rich Lalley spoke about Operation Warm, which provides winter coats and shoes for children in need. Michelle Wilson represented the Rotary Action Group LBGT+. Jenny Andrews, Executive Director of Malaria Partners International, described this program models on Rotary’s polio eradication effort (and like PolioPlus, blessed with matching grants from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation). Roger's Run, a Red Hook Community EventLisa Loughran from Red Hook, NY, visits Radio Rotary’s microphone to tell about the story behind the annual Red Hook event, Roger’s Run for AMC Awareness. This is a community-wide set of runs and walks that had its inspiration in the discovery vis ultrasound that Loughran’s son would be born with a congenital condition, arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, usually called AMC. This condition affects joints and muscle throughout the body. Roger Loughran was born with his limbs extended—the joints had “frozen” in position. Loughran, a runner and cyclist, originated the run-walk event to raise money for AMSI, where she had discovered other parents of children with AMC, parents whose stories gave her hope. Indeed, twelve years and much physical therapy later, Roger Loughran plays basketball and football. He is well known throughout the Red Hook community. Roger’s Run has involved that community every June in a group project to support research into AMC and its treatment.

Women in Recovery Work and UpcycleUpcycling is taking something that might be discarded as trash and turning it into something more valuable. Unshattered is a charitable organization that helps women in recovery from addition stay sober as they upcycle donated textiles and leathers into beautiful handbags and other products. Radio Rotary’s guest for this program is Kelly Lyndgaard, who six years ago left her work as an engineer and physicist for IBM to found Unshattered. Located in Hopewell Junction in Dutchess County, Unshattered partners with major manufacturers who donate their surplus textiles and leathers. The women workers, all of whom came from recovery community housing, design and sew the materials into handbags, leather tote bags, wallets, and more. The program is unusually effective—in the six years of its existence, none of the women have relapsed into active addiction. Community Action PartnershipElizabeth Spira, CEO of the Community Action Partnership of Dutchess Country(CAP), visits Radio Rotary to describe the many programs that CAP offers to assist low-income residents with food, housing, energy needs, prescription medicine costs, and more. Community Action agencies originated as part of President Lyndon Johnson’s “War on Poverty,” which began in 1964, and are an example of a federal program the works at the country or regional level. For those in need, CAP supplied 3 days of food (3 meals a day) at 4 locations in Dutchess County. For energy needs, not only is there financial help in buying fuel, but a weatherization offer that dramatically reduces fuel needs. The employment program helps seekers “Dress for Success” and prepare resumes. Case workers help sort out the problems people face and find solutions to them. Village of Tivoli Celebrates 150th AnniversaryTivoli is a quaint village on the Hudson River in northwest Dutchess County. Tivoli Mayor Joel Griffith visits Radio Rotary to tell about the village history, now in its 150th year since incorporation, and about the sesquicentennial celebration, which is based on the date in 1872 when Upper Red Hook Landing and the nearby village of Madalin were joined as the Village of Tivoli. Although the sesquicentennial observance will continue throughout 2022, the main events will be June 17, 18, and 19. This weekend will feature, among other activities, a “story slam,” the parade and block party (with music), and fireworks to wind up the events. Mayor Griffith, a lifelong Tivoli resident, is also a painter, whose series of seven paintings documenting the town, is permanently displayed in the village’s historic Watts de Peyster Hall. Tivoli is known for its art galleries andrestaurants as well as the Kaatsbaan International Dance Center.
